Pets on Prozac - Now I have heard it all!
Imagine my surprise when I was perusing NPR News to find . Honestly folks, don't you think we've gone a little bit too far? Do you not understand that dog and cat physiology and psychology are not the same as our own? What part of that is difficult to comprehend? Why would you endanger the life of your pet by giving them something not intended for them?
I love animals. I love dogs and cats. I have had many pets share my home. But never, and I do mean never would I give them prozac or any other kind of psychotropic drug. The closest I have ever come is giving a very nervous dog Bach's Rescue Remedy for him to be able to travel on an airplane. I didn't want him to be scared. I have heard of people doing this during fireworks season too. But Prozac?! Have none of you seen the ? Part of an animals behavior problems is because we treat them like people and they become confused.
Its getting nutty out there. The latest craze is doggie/kitty birthday parties for the rich who don't have anything else to do with their money. These include invitations, party favors, party hats and of course a specially designed "Cake". These beauties can be found at the gourmet dog and cat bakeries. Of course only organic ingredients are used. Each ingredient is carefully considered. I guess Scooby Snacks aren't good enough anymore.
I ask you what is next? Are we going to start providing our pets with ED drugs to make sure that their sexual experiences are all that they can be? Ask the doctor for a prescription of Viagra - but it won't be for you of course, it will be for your dog!
Then we get into the designer wear for your pet. Burbery, Coach, Louis Vuittion collars and accessories. They have little shoes, and coats and their own suitcases for when they travel! I mean "Precious" couldn't possibly be seen in last year's style could they? I shudder to think of it.
I am ashamed to admit to you all that our own "kid" has a pug puppy and dresses it up and gives it a pacifier to suck on. No, I do not jest. I just shake my head as she squeals and coos over the ugly thing.
It becomes to the point where people give more attention to their animals than they do their own children, spouses, family and themselves. What is with that? I don't get it! Is it because of the unconditional love thing that you receive from an animal? I have to wonder about that because I have seen people be absolutely gaga over pets who aren't even nice to their owners. I know one dog who bites her owner all of the time! Yet, this dog is fed only the finest food, better than the owner (person) eats themselves.
I have had both cats and dogs in my home. I love them dearly when I have them. They get their own bed, and their own place in my home. Occasionally they even get invited up into my bed for a snuggle. But have I EVER bought them cookies from a pet bakery or had their nails painted, or even made a doggie play date for any of them? NO!
For those who do, God love ya. Seriously. But know that you are nuts. Any animal who needs to sniff the behind of another does not need to wear designer stuff. You can dress it up any way you like, but it still does not make it human or replace a human child.
Let's just imagine taking that money and maybe putting it into a college fund for someone who otherwise couldn't afford to go? Or how about feeding someone who is hungry? Or helping children to be able to read in depressed areas?
Pets are a great addition to any home where they are loved and properly cared for. But these pampered prima donna pets are too much! Think people.... we need to care for our own species properly first. Sheesh!
*P.S. Maybe the pets do need prozac after all, to deal with their self esteem issues after their stupid owners dress them up like the picture on this posting!*
